Hello! I’m Chris Van der Valke. I’m a traveller, an explorer of Asia, a writer and a journalist. On February, 13, 2012 I visited some provinces of Isan (an eastern region of Thailand) and make some photos. Let’s see them.

Everything began at 6 am. To the hall where we, my fellow traveller Alina and I, were sleeping some monks came and started praying. We decided not to disturb them and went to see ancient Khmer Temples of 10th -11th centuries.
While we’re washing our faces, sunrise began.

This is the place of our overnight stop, a pagoda of Buddhist monastery in Nang Rong City, Buriram Province.

I took out the food, monks had given us the previous day, and came into the nearest mini-market “7/11″ to take some ketchup they usually put on a special table where everyone could spice the hamburger he/she had bought according to his/her taste.

Then I went to see King Phanom Rung Sanctuary. On my way I saw how natives dry chili pepper.

The sanctuary. It’s little and new, built about 20 years ago.

The interior of the sanctuary.

Isan fast food. Local food differs from Thai. Isan dishes are based on meat or fish while Thai food main element is rice. Maybe this is the reason why Buriram football team is the best in Thailand League.

Monks with their cups for alms.

The picture we saw near a high school where students also study cookery. Funny, isn’t it?

So, we’re out of town trying to stop a car. We did it at 8 a.m.

My fellow traveller Alina in the cargo box of Toyota I had stopped.

Then we had to change the car and joined the company of 8 drunk Thais. At about 9 we came to the gates of Prasat Khao Phanom Rung Park where the Thais were said to pay 20 bahts and for foreigners the price of one ticket was 100 bahts. Our Thai fellow travellers were disappointed a little but said they knew a free way. We drove about 700 meters more, saw a hole in the fence and entered the park.

Lotus.

Ruins of the temple library.

Square pools surround the temple.

So, we had to leave to see another temple. I couldn’t leave without being shot with the monastery monks.

One more lotus.

10 a.m. We’re at the road again.

It’s beautiful, isn’t it?

Here’s the sign showing the way to the other temple I’d like to see, Prasat Muang Tarn.

It’s in 7 km distance but I had to travel by two cars. In the photo you can see a driver of one of them.

We used the previous method to enter the park and suddenly saw the securities of it. They said nothing.

10.30. Here is Prasat Muang Tarn built in the 11th century.

It was 11.30 and it was time to start to Ubon Ratchathani. I had to go there to prolong my stay in Thailand for 2 months more.

But first we decided to have a rest and relax a little.

On the way to Ubon Ratchathani.

Alina decided to have dinner in Prakhon Chai. She bought some mango. A kilo costs about 45 bahts.

Then we saw posters stumping for Buriram footballers to be elected deputies of local parliament.

Then we tried to stop a car at a petrol station and stopped a long distance trucker Nont. We had to spend together about 270 km. Truckers usually move slowly, 70 – 90 km per hour but consistently. Sometimes it’s better to travel by a slow track than to change a lot of local pickups and autos.

We left the trucker at 5 pm at Siridhorn Lake.

The Thai come here to have a rest at weekends and they usually relax in these little houses which belong to different cafes.

Buffaloes.

It was 5.30 and it was getting dark. At 6.30 it’s already dark here. So, we decided to find where to stay at night. We stayed at a monastery.
7.30 pm. I’m falling asleep at the feet of emerald Buddha.
